Olivine (forsterite) from Kilborne Hole, Dona Ana County, New Mexico. Wow, a chunk of Earth's mantle that made it to Earth's surface! This nodule of peridotite (a rock consisting of peridot/olivine crystals) in a basaltic matrix is from the Kilbourne Hole Maar, in Dona Ana County, NM. Found as volcanic xenolith bombs from an explosive eruption about 25,000 years ago. The shallow eruption occurred when rising magma encountered shallow groundwater. The olivine (peridotite) part derived from the Earth's mantle at depths greater than 30 km.

Small cabinet specimen: About 2.9" x 2.7" x 2.0" (73mm x 68mm x 50mm)
