Taxonomy: Kingdom Animalia : Phylum Arthropoda : Class Trilobita
Trilobites are a class of extinct marine arthropods that lived from the beginning of the Cambrian Period (about 521 million years ago); the presence of trilobites, in fact, defines the beginning of the Cambrian Period) through the end of the Permian Period, about 252 million years ago. They are considered to be one of the most successful marine animals to every exist, surviving for almost 270 million years, with over 22,000 species known (so far).
Trilobites evolved into many ecological niches – they swam feeding on plankton, and others moved over the sea floor as predators, scavengers or filter feeders. Some even crawled onto land.
The name means “three lobes” referring to the three sections of the typical trilobite body plan.
