Mineralogy and Geology of Sodalite
Sodalite is a feldspathoid, similar to the feldspars, but with quite different properties.
Composition: Na4(Si3Al3)O12Cl
Crystal system: Isometric
Crystal habit: Usually massive; dodecahedral crystals are rare.
Cleavage: Poor/indistinct on {110}
Fracture: Sub-conchoidal
Color: Often blue, orange, or greyish-white; all colors
Luster: Vitreous, greasy
Diaphaneity: Transparent, translucent
Moh’s scale hardness: 5 ½ - 6
Streak: White
Specific gravity: 2.27 – 2.33
Named after: its sodium content.
Type locality: Ilimaussaq complex, Kujalleq, Greenland.
Geological occurrence: Sodalite occurs in several geologic environments:
- in alkaline intrusives (Princess Mine, Bancroft, Ontario, Canada);
- in alkaline pegmatites (Mont St Hilaire, Quebec, Canada);
- in carbonatites (Magnet Cove, Arkansas, USA);
- in marble skarns or metasomatized calcareous rocks (Ladjuar Medan, Sar-e-Sang, Afghanistan);
- in phonolites and volcanic ejecta (Mount Vesuvius, Italy).
