Mineralogy and Geology of Rosasite

Mineral formula: (Cu,Zn)2(CO3)(OH)2

Grouping: member of the Rosasite Group

Crystal system: monoclinic

Crystal habit: Occurs as mammilary, botryoidal crusts with a fibrous to spherulitic structure

Color: blue, blue-green to green, sky-blue

Luster: vitreous, silky

Cleavage: distinct/good in two directions at right angles

Diaphaneity:  translucent

Moh’s scale hardness: 4 ½

Streak: white

Specific gravity: 4 – 4.2

Named after: its discovery locality, the Rosas Mine, in Sulcis, Sardinia, Italy, in 1908 by Domenico Lovisato.

Type locality: the Rosas Mine Complex, Narcao, South Sardinia Province, Sardinia, Italy.

Geological occurrence: a secondary mineral associated with copper and zinc deposits.
