Mineralogy and Geology of Rhodochrosite
Mineral formula: MnCO3
Grouping: A member of the calcite group.
Crystal system: trigonal
Crystal habit: rhombohedral, frequently rounded and composite; scalenohedral crystals are rare. Also occurs as massive, coarsely granular, compact, columnar or in crusts; and as stalactitic (with zoned growth rings); and botryoidal forms.
Cleavage: perfect on {1011}
Fracture: irregular, uneven, conchoidal
Color: pale to deep red pink
Luster: vitreous, pearly
Diaphaneity: transparent to translucent
Moh’s scale hardness: 3 ½ - 4
Specific gravity: 3.7
Named after: its pink color from the Greek ρόδο, "rose", and χρώς, "coloring", in 1813 by Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann.
Type locality: Cavnic Mine, Cavnic, Romania
Geological occurrence: Occurs in low to moderate temperature hydrothermal veins, metamorphic deposits, carbonatites, and in sedimentary deposits.
