Moldavite is a glass, not a mineral, because its internal structure is amorphous, not crystalline.

Chemistry: SiO2 plus Al2O3, variable.

Color: light to darker green

Luster: vitreous

Diaphaneity: translucent to transparent to opaque

Moh’s scale hardness: 5 ½

Specific gravity: 2.32 – 2.38

Named after: the region of Moldavia (where the Moldau River flows).

Type locality: Name first introduced by Zippe (1836) after the main occurrence at the Vltava River (Moldau River) in Southern Bohemia.

Geological occurrence: A natural glass originating from the impact of a meteorite in Bavaria 15 million years ago (present Ries crater)
