Mineralogy and Geology of Hubnerite

 

Composition: MnWO4

 

Crystal system: Monoclinic

 

Crystal habit: Crystals commonly prismatic and striated; also tabular, to bladed, flattened and numerous other forms. Can occur in radiating groups or in parallel configuration.

 

Cleavage: Perfect on {010}

 

Fracture:  Irregular / uneven

 

Color: yellow, brown, blackish brown, reddish brown, black

 

Luster:  Adamantine, resinous, or metallic

 

Diaphaneity: Transparent / translucent

 

Moh’s scale hardness: 4 – 4 ½

 

Streak: Greenish-gray, yellow, to reddish-brown

 

Specific gravity:  7.12 – 7.18

 

Named after:  Friedrich Adolph Hübner [May 17, 1830, from Koenigsberg, East Prussia, a German mining engineer and metallurgist from Freiberg, Saxony. 

 

Type locality: The Erie and Enterprize veins of the Ellsworth Mine, Ellsworth Mining District, Nye County, Nevada.

 

Geological occurrence: High-temperature hydrothermal veins and pneumatolytically altered greisens; granite pegmatites and sedimentary alluvial deposits.
