Mineralogy and Geology of Beryl

Mineral formula: Be3Al2(Si6O18)

Grouping: Member of the Beryl Group

Crystal system: hexagonal

Crystal habit: Long to short prismatic crystals.

Cleavage: imperfect/fair on {0001}

Fracture: conchoidal

Color: clear, white (goshenite), yellow (heliodor), green (emerald), blue (aquamarine), pink (morganite)

Luster: vitreous, sub-vitreous, waxy, greasy

Diaphaneity: transparent, translucent

Moh’s scale hardness: 7 ½ - 8

Streak: white

Specific gravity: 2.63 – 2.92

Named after: (possibly) from the Greek "beryllos" which referred to a number of blue-green stones in antiquity.. 

Geological occurrence: a primary, rock-forming mineral found in pegmatites. Red beryl is found in topaz rhyolites.
