Obsidian
Obsidian is a type of volcanic glass with a high silica content and conchoidal fracture. It is not a mineral. In spite of its dark color, it is NOT associated with basalt lava flows. In New Mexico, the Jemez Volcanic Field contains numerous obsidian deposits. Types of obsidian include Apache tears, Pele's tears, and rainbow and silver sheen obsidian.
