Fossil Ammonites
Ammonites are a now-extinct variety of the group cephalopoda that includes modern-day nautiluses and octopuses. They lived from about 450 million years ago to 66 million years ago, becoming extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period (along with dinosaurs and other groups). Their fossil shells consist of calcite, silica or (rarely) pyrite.
